Background
Building regional capacity in data management requires not just trained analysts but trainers who can pass on good practice. This training-of-trainers (ToT) sits within the “Digital Platforms for Disease Surveillance and Control: Best Practices from Asia (DMgt Asia)” initiative and is designed for cascade delivery, preparing trainers to teach data management and data science within their own institutions. It is aimed at prospective trainers and senior analysts who will go on to deliver this material onward.
Approach
The curriculum spans data management fundamentals, working with data in R, AI for statistical analysis, AI-assisted R best practices, and broader data-science-for-public-health best practices. Sessions combine Quarto-based slide decks with structured group activities; facilitator versions include fully worked solutions to support re-delivery. Worked examples use real datasets including a Kerala COVID deaths dataset and a WHO tuberculosis dataset.
What we found
- Trainees gain both the technical content and the pedagogical scaffolding (activities plus solutions) needed to teach it onward.
- Reinforces reproducible, principled data management practice across the analysis lifecycle.
- Introduces responsible use of AI tooling within statistical and R workflows.
Outputs & impact
- A complete ToT package created in November 2024: Quarto slide decks; group-activity worksheets with fully worked solutions; demo datasets (Kerala COVID, WHO tuberculosis); and a Quarto report template.
- Modules span data management, working with data in R, AI in statistical analysis, AI-assisted R best practices, and data-science-for-public-health best practices.
- Designed for cascade delivery across the DMgt Asia network, so trainers can re-deliver it in their own institutions.
